Pleasant View Baptist family,
When I attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1998-2000, there was no class offered to us entitled “The Phased Re-entry”. Back then, I doubt any professor would have seen this coming. Did any theological professor in any seminary even a year ago see this coming? I doubt it. Rest assured, God did. The staff and other leaders in our church are praying and seeking God’s guidance in what we do. We are also using the wisdom God gives to search the data and seek out advice from trusted leaders in other churches, in our denomination and also leaders at the local, state and national levels. We are all learning together.
At this point in our church, we are in Phase 2 of our Re-entry. This means we are meeting in the worship center while maintaining the 6′ rule, with pews being blocked out to ensure the spacing is accurate. We have one-way traffic patterns within our building, meaning we enter the side doors and exit the front doors. We are trying to eliminate people crossing one another in the halls or in the isles. The church cleaning crew has been disinfecting the areas of the building which have the current potential for use. We are not passing plates or handing out bulletins. The doors are being opened by one hand and left open while people enter or exit so people do not have to touch the same surfaces as others. We are wearing face-coverings while entering and exiting. We are also trying to avoid using the restrooms at church (open, but discouraged). Finally, we want to ask every parent to please help your child understand they should not be touching others.
In Phase 1, we expected 30-50 people to attend. Our average was 37. In Phase 2, we expected 50-70 people. Last Sunday was our first in Phase 2. We had 55 people. So far, so good. From what we are hearing, Sunday School will not take place during any Phase until after Phase 4. They do not want people in tight quarters such as our smaller rooms for Sunday School. If you and/or your Sunday School class would like to meet outside somewhere (your yard at home, a park, our cemetery, etc…), feel free as long as you practice the 6′ rule. Most of the adult Sunday School classes are either meeting online with Zoom or on Facebook Messenger. Thank you all for being so flexible!
There is a glimmer of GOOD NEWS on the horizon! We are prayerfully planning an abbreviated VBS at the end of summer and making it like a “back to school” celebration too. We hope to have this the Friday, Saturday and Sunday just before school begins. We don’t know yet about using the classrooms by that point, but we think it may be a possibility. So, by the end of July or the first part of August, we hope to be able to do this. Pray with us!
In Jesus’ care,
Pastor Jerry Jeter
