Deacons

I find it fitting that we are starting off the month of October reading the first chapter in the Bible which talks about deacons. Today (October 1st), we are focusing on Acts 6. Of course, our church will finish nominating men to be deacons tomorrow (October 2nd).

Acts 6 begins with the account of finding seven servants who will be trustworthy to look after the needs of the widows within the Church. Maybe you don’t see the word deacon in the text, but the word servant comes from the same Greek word. So, it is understood that a deacon is a servant. In this passage of Scripture, we are looking at the first official deacons or servants of the Church.

Later, in 1 Timothy chapter 3, we see more qualifications for those whom we might want to serve as deacons. Here, we see only three qualifications. They are to have a good reputation. They are to be Holy Spirit-filled. And, they are to be filled with wisdom.

As we seek to nominate deacons and later vote on them this month, pray about these qualifications and the others found in 1 Timothy. Ask God to show us who might be ready to serve.

In Jesus’ service,
Pastor Jerry Jeter
